Starting JanumacOS Catalina will not be supported, except in rare circumstances with approved exceptions. We will not require all supported Macs to be upgraded to Big Sur (or macOS Monterey) until 2022. We understand that an upgrade process like this can be an inconvenience, and we want to help make sure you have time to do this.

We expect the upgrade process via the Service Desk to take 3-5 days depending upon how busy we are. If you’d prefer that the CAS Service Desk take care of the backup and upgrade process for you, we can schedule a time for you to drop off your Mac, or you can drop it off at your convenience. Starting in August, you will find an option in Self Service named Big Sur Upgrade which will warn you that it will download and install macOS Big Sur after erasing your Mac. You can complete the upgrade without being on campus, as long as you have a backup of your data. If you maintain a backup of your own using Time Machine or something similar and are comfortable with it, you can complete this upgrade on your own. In June, Apple announced the next version of macOS coming this fall and we have already begun testing macOS Monterey as we anticipate being able to make it available to you before the end of the year.īecause of this management system change and the required space to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, you will need to backup your data and fully erase your Mac as part of the upgrade. In addition, we’ve vastly improved the login and account experience, and we’ve laid the groundwork for faster updates and upgrades in the future.
